HUMBOLDT STATE HONORS DR. REESE HALTER
22 April 2004
Dr. Reese Halter, President of Global Forest Science, is being honored with the Humboldt State University President's Distinguished Service Award. The Award will be presented by Humboldt State President Rollin C. Richmond at the University's 2004 Commencement Saturday, May 15 in the Redwood Bowl.

President Richmond said Dr. Halter is being honored for his efforts to enrich the quality of life in society as well as his commitment to Humboldt State.

It is appropriate Dr. Halter will receive his award in Redwood Bowl as one of the many achievements of Global Forest Science is to have discovered new forms of life or biological diversity in coastal redwoods northern California. Global Forest Science is an international forest biology research institute which is a world leader in encouraging science-based conservation of temperate forests. Global Forest Science has 140 scientists working in eight countries in its quest to protect the environment and discover common sense solutions to problems in nature.

In addition to founding and leading Global Forest Science, Dr. Halter is also a bestselling author of children's books and a new environmental guide to trees of the west coast. He has also hosted Dr. Reese's Planet, a television series designed to engage children in science. He is regularly called upon by news media across the U.S. to provide commentary on issues related to the environment, trees, forest fires and insect infestations of the nation's forests.

Dr. Halter, who received his Ph.D. in Forest Science, Tree Physiology, from The University of Melbourne in Australia is fascinated with subalpine and alpine fauna and flora and spends significant time in these ecosystems, including the forests of California. Among his many passions is a belief that children must have hands-on experience in science and, to that end, he has provided weather stations to middle schools in the United States and around the world allowing students to track climate change.

Dr. Halter is married to speaker and author LuAn Mitchell-Halter and they live with their three children in Palm Springs, California.
