Blue elder belongs to the Honeysuckle family. It is usually found as a tall shrub but it can grow to reach about 9 m. The berry-like bluish-black fruits are sweet and edible, and can be used for making jams, jellies, pies and wine. The fruit is an important source of food for many birds.
