sassafrasSassafras albidum (Nutt.) Nees.
Sassafras is a small (<13 m) tree, which often has numerous root sprouts surrounding its base. When its leaves, twigs, branches or bark are crushed, they emit a very pleasant fragrance. The bark of the root is used medicinally, especially as a diuretic, and its roots are used to flavour root beer.
