Madrone
arbutusArbutus menziesii Pursh
Arbutus is the only indigenous evergreen broadleaf tree in Canada. Its young bark is initially yellowish-green and soon reddens to a smooth strawberry colour. The bark is deciduous - as it ages it breaks into many small flakes. The white flowers hang in dense clusters and the flowers have a strong honey-like smell, which attract bees. First Peoples used the bark and leaves for a number of medicinal remedies.
