Walnut
black walnutJuglans nigra L.
Black walnut is a medium-sized (>35 m) tree. Its exquisitely coloured wood is prized. The roots of black walnut release juglone - a toxin - which inhibits most plants from growing in its understory.

butternutJuglans cinerea L.
Butternut is a medium-sized (>22 m) tree. In many areas it is stricken with a fungal disease known as butternut canker. Seeds of this tree are edible. Commercial oil is extracted from the nutmeat, and yellow and orange dyes are produced from the fruit husks and bark of the tree. The nut is an important food source for squirrels and other small mammals.
