Chamaecyparis
Yellow CedarChamaecyparis nootkatensis (D. Don.) Spach
Yellow cedar is a medium-sized (>35 m) subalpine tree which can live for more than 1,300 years. It is a very slow-growing tree. To successfully break seed dormancy, seeds require two successive cold stratification treatments interspersed with a warm period. When exposed, the inner bark is yellow and is said to smell like raw potatoes.
